We joined Netflix

Thursday, September 28th, 2006

I guess that makes us like the rest of the world now? Except, we’re not on the Scotty program of “unlimited per month;” rather, we are on the more moderate limit four per month. Will we survive? I guess so. Our first arrival, “Cold Mountain”, came two days ago, and we have been too busy […]

The Common Ground Fair

Sunday, September 24th, 2006

Going to the Common Ground Fair - Maine’s annual gathering to “celebrate” rural living - is so unlike me. But it is very much like Frank, who has gone six or eight times in his past life. We actually went together once, three years ago, and I pronounced it too “earthy” for me to really […]

No spinach here

Sunday, September 24th, 2006

Maine is, apparently, a no-spinach state. At least it seemed so when we went shopping for salad fixings for our company-dinner the other night (Thursday). Nope, there was none of the usual bagged-spinach, or even the bagged baby spinach — our favorite — for sale. No fresh spinach, either. So we settled for “fresh greens” […]

Learning about the Jaffa Expedition

Friday, September 22nd, 2006

Oh, the things I missed learning about, before I met Frank. Take, for instance, the Jaffa Expedition that left Jonesport, Maine, on Aug. 11, 1866, for Palestine. They hit the beach on Sept. 22 (140 years ago today, get it?) and went to work on setting up a colony. “They” is 157 people from Down […]

Too many gladiolas

Thursday, September 21st, 2006

I never thought I would complain about having too many gladiolas at once — but I am. Fortunately these are the last blooms of the season, and they are many colors. So it’s mix and match for the bouquets. And I toss out the ones with the raggedy edges and the insect bites.

Driving Miss Daisy

Monday, September 18th, 2006

Mother in the backseat is not quite the “Driving Miss Daisy” that she makes reference to in a fun way, but it’s not far off. Frank and I arrived at the Baltimore airport on Thursday for the express purpose of driving Mom and Dad around, to their back-to-back September engagements on the 15th (park) and […]

Missed the A-line already

Wednesday, September 13th, 2006

You know how Southwest Airlines gives its passengers A-B-and-C lines for boarding, and A goes first? I just did online checking (”24 hours in advance”) for our 1:45pm flight on Thursday from Manchester to Baltimore. Well - we’re in the B-line already! What’s with everybody else - totally nervous that they won’t get a good […]

They plan ahead

Monday, September 11th, 2006

Frank has been asked to be a speaker on “Maine and the Civil War” for the Milbridge Historical Society — for September 2007. Now that’s one organized group, that knows how to do a year’s worth of scheduling. Actually, with the appropriate advance publicity, the Milbridge group tends to draw crowds of 30 or 40 […]

Gladiolas galore

Monday, September 11th, 2006

We have had plenty of tall-stalked gladiolas over the last two weeks, to the point that they are so weighty they fall forward. Those that do, become our indoor bouquet-gladiolas. We have had white, orange and purple. Very delightful for a non-gardener.

O Canada, the full version

Sunday, September 10th, 2006

Now we know all the words to Canada’s anthem. They are printed on a bookmark we picked up at one of the many, wonderful information centers that are so helpful around New Brunswick and Nova Scotia.
O Canada! Our home and native land!
True patriot love in all thy sons command.
With glowing hearts we see thee rise,
The […]

Mom-and-Pop motels

Saturday, September 9th, 2006

This time a week ago Frank and I were enjoying our three-nights-away trip to New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. Since it was in another country, I was very happy. As Frank will say, if he can’t make me happy with travel to a foreign country, I can be happy with a range of local newspapers. […]

Camp Cassidy, Confirmed

Tuesday, September 5th, 2006

Last summer (and now that we’re over Labor Day I can say that) we never really talked about Camp Cassidy in 2007 until 2006 was over. We just didn’t know how it would work out.
It went wonderfully, so we will do it again. Probably at the same time, as would-be campers and counselors (most of […]

Observations from Canada

Monday, September 4th, 2006

We have many, including the fact that out of 10 possible meals in Canada, only one of them took place at Tim Hortons, if you call that a meal (coffee and a donut?). What do you want? It was Labour Day morning and nothing else was open. Our observations will tumble forth into this blog […]
