Rein’s Diner

Wednesday, November 29th, 2006

At least, I think that’s the name of the place in Vernon, Connecticut, which is wonderfully located about six hours from Potomac and eight hours from Machias. In all of our driving down for this or that, our trip home after Thanksgiving was the first time that passing the Vernon exit along Interstate 95 coincided […]

There we go again …

Wednesday, November 29th, 2006

You’d think we had died, for lack of entries in this blog. Time to get with it again. At least this one makes for one more entry for the November archives.

And now for our next party …

Tuesday, November 21st, 2006

Life for us is actually a lot more fun than this blog makes it seem. We have friends, things to do, professional this and that. We go here and there. We just don’t record it all on these pages.
We had an openhouse on Sunday, Nov. 12 for our newspaper friends, and while we overspent and […]

30 years, too

Monday, November 20th, 2006

I have to echo Annie’s “30 Years” comment on her blog, because I also can’t believe that Spike turned 30 yesterday, Nov. 19.
Gosh, has it been that long since he was “Just home … just“? Even though I am now 47 and he’s now just 30, he is still our baby brother.

That’s our Frank

Sunday, November 19th, 2006

So, it has been one week since we last delivered our papers, on Saturday, Nov. 11. Interestingly, someone in Machias, about age 25, had shown interest in our route by last Monday, although apparently he doesn’t have a car and intended to do the whole route by walking. Impossible. Twice our paper didn’t arrive, […]

The party’s over

Monday, November 13th, 2006

No, not the “customer appreciation openhouse” that we held Sunday afternoon for all the customers along the paper route. The paper route itself is a thing of the past, and all because Frank has his principles. Back on Nov. 1, he said, “I can’t support a company that fired my wife,” then sent his notice […]

Veterans’ Day

Friday, November 10th, 2006

We live in a place small enough that local veterans are honored in very public ways. Take Thursday, for example, the day when each area high school held assemblies. At Machias Memorial High School, Frank was one of about 40 men and women who stood when their name was called (”Frank Cassidy, U.S. Navy, 1968-1972″). […]

Tightening the belt

Monday, November 6th, 2006

Without dredging up all the awful details (although that would be a post all by itself), let’s just say that Frank and I will be tightening the belt. We have sliced the Netflix plan to the one-at-a-time, $12 a month option. We are cutting out the casual dinners at the Bluebird Ranch restaurant, which have […]
