All our Netflix choices

Tuesday, January 30th, 2007

Here, in reverse order, is all the Netflix movies we have seen since Oct 3 (with time out for our Thanksgiving and Christmas trips):
The Devil Wears Prada, Little Miss Sunshine, Animal Crackers, Roger & Me, A Night at the Opera, 12 Angry Men, Out of Africa, The Constant Gardener, Walk the Line, Good Night and […]

‘Little Miss Sunshine’

Tuesday, January 30th, 2007

We saw Little Miss Sunshine a few evenings ago with Netflix. More than a few people, including Mom, had said how wonderful it was. Frank’s comment, halfway through, was, “Why do you keep getting all these weird movies?” But the ending turned out to have us both laughing on end. We loved Olive’s gumption and […]

Cat lost her meow

Saturday, January 27th, 2007

Fortunately, she got it back, too. But there was a week or so when poor little Bunny would open her mouth and not a sound came out. I figured she had a sore throat. She’s all back to normal now, and we aren’t the only ones happy about that.

Frank’s award

Saturday, January 27th, 2007

Frank has a very nice plaque that reads: Maine Bar Foundation and Volunteer Lawyers Project - Pro Bono Publico Award, Francis J. Cassidy, Jr., Esq., Most Family Law Cases Accepted by an Attorney, January 25, 2007.
How’s THAT for accomplishment? Turns out he was one of five attorneys statewide who accepted five family law cases in […]

“Americans Who Tell the Truth”

Saturday, January 27th, 2007

Frank and I have found an incredible website, www.Americanswhotellthetruth.org, and even better, we saw the actual travelling exhibit with all the portraits and statements.
Cathryn Wilson led us to it at its current location at University of New England in Portland. The 48 (of apparently 60) portraits on display included those from the 19th century to […]

I’m lovin’ it

Monday, January 22nd, 2007

That’s the McDonalds’ tagline worldwide right now, but it’s working for me, here in little Machias, Maine. Ever have those times when everything in your life is just clicking? Aside from the January cold, things are good right now. Can’t complain. I guess the fact that I’m going to start working full-time as of Feb. […]

These great L.L. Bean slippers

Monday, January 22nd, 2007

Frank slips into his slippers first thing every morning, every day of his life; I don’t. I wear socks if my feet are cold. Trouble is, for the last four years I’ve been wearing Frank’s socks. And he’s just tired of that.
So off we went Jan 13 to the local L.L. Bean store. Slipper problem […]

Martin Luther King Jr. Day

Tuesday, January 16th, 2007

We enjoyed a nice celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. yesterday. Snow kept most people away, but there was a group of 20 who found their way to Gene Nichols’ music room at UMM. For two hours, with ukeleles and drums leading the way, we sang all the good songs: Blowing in the Wind; Magic […]

January - really, now

Friday, January 12th, 2007

You know, I was getting to like the New January, in which we don’t see any snow and the temps are bearable, even balmy here in eastern Maine. We were going along just fine there until yesterday, when the night temperature fell to 7 degrees. Yesterday was close to that cold - well, it did […]

Setting up the rain gauge

Saturday, January 6th, 2007

Frank didn’t know just how much he coveted an Oregon Scientific Wireless Rain Gauge until the moment he saw one — which happened to belong to someone else. The Stewarts gave him (us) one for Christmas after he had seen how it worked while we stayed with them for the few days at Christmas.
This gift […]

“Twelve Angry Men”

Saturday, January 6th, 2007

Netflix is our new best friend - we could pass so many evenings happily in the company of Netflix. Last night we viewed “Twelve Angry Men” - the classic, except that I had never before paid attention and seen it. There’s interesting commentary here. Frank, the court-appointed defender, made a few comments along the way.

These few days

Thursday, January 4th, 2007

There is, for me, something very comforting about these first few days of January. If I had a meeting to schedule, I would set it for Jan. 2, 3, 4 or 5 … there is something just electric about things that take place in these earliest days of the new year. (The same goes for […]

Red beans and rice

Monday, January 1st, 2007

This is the fourth New Year’s Day that Frank and I have made red beans and rice — for good luck, of course. We use the Joy of Cooking recipe, which calls for pork hocks, celery, onion, green pepper and seasoning all stewing before the soaked beans go in. Then the kielbasa sausage is added, […]

Better ways for the long road

Monday, January 1st, 2007

As we have just driven back and forth, all 780 miles, between Machias and Potomac for the third time since March (and we flew there, too, in both August and September), we have finally figured out how to make the best out of a long, lousy trip on the road.
Getting there: Leave Friday afternoon to […]
